Star light, star bright…

  Tonight my daughter and I looked up and saw the brightest, most dazzling star in the sky. I stared at it for a few moments before I was galvanized into action. Coat, shoes, tripod: Check. Camera, card, settings: Check.  Test shot one, two, three…. and action. Every day offers a new photographic opportunity if you are ready and willing and able. I love discovering something new, or visualizing something ordinary in a new way. It’s like breathing, and I can’t imagine a day without that creative motivation. Tonight, just after twilight, that motivation was the star, Sirius–a truly magnificent beacon a mere 8.6 light years away… For all my readers and followers, may you find your creative light, as well. Sky on fire…

 

Sometimes color just rules the day. This evening sky, taken from my Phoenix hotel room window overlooking some of the local flora and fauna at the base of Camelback Mountain, was just too compelling not to shoot. These colors became more muted, then unexpectedly reburst in one final blaze of glory before fading into final twilight.

Photography is all about creativity, as well as documentation. And most of the time,  interesting images emerge at the intersection of those two aspects. I know some folks are purists, and feel photography should be documenting the truth; others feel it’s entirely a creative art, with no boundaries at all. For me, it’s all about creating emotion and mood–something evocative. I photographed the Golden Gate Bridge quite a bit on my visit  last year, and tried in my limited time to find many different ways to portray it. This shot has been processed to emulate twilight, although admittedly, the blue atmosphere is entirely of my own making. It does bring out a different essence to the bridge, however, and in the end, I quite liked the alternative portrayal. It’s not something I’d go overboard with, but it’s certainly interesting to push the boundaries within yourself, from time to time. Hope you enjoy…
