Glass menagerie…

Part of being an observant photographer is seeing something inherently artistic in ordinary things around you. That is one of the goals I set for myself when I set off on a nature walk, or a city jaunt, or even as part of a typical vacation tour with the family–I love finding something unique and expressive, in seemingly ordinary things. Sometimes, however, art just jumps out at you, and little interpretation is needed. This extraordinary display by the noted glass sculptor Chihuly, which festooned the ceiling of the Bellagio in Las Vegas, was such an occasion. The beautiful shapes, colors, and layers of curvilinear geometry were quite breathtaking, almost lifelife, and in shooting it, my goal became simply to capture the unique sense of artistic expression that the artist himself had already presented, albeit in two dimensions rather than Chihuly’s three.
